In 2009 on goodreads, I gave five stars ("it was amazing") to only two books. It appears that I gave another 45 books a four-star rating ("really liked it"). The following are a few of my favorites of those 47 good reads:
- Favorite "I can't believe I'd never heard of this author before this year" book: Unwind by Neal Shusterman
- Favorite new release by a favorite YA author: North of Beautiful by Justina Chen Headley
(Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson is a close second.) - Favorite non-fiction book: Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist by Michael J. Fox
- Favorite re-read: Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
- Favorite new-to-me character: Ruby Oliver in The Boyfriend List, The Boy Book, and The Treasure Map of Boys by E. Lockhart
- Favorite books to share with my daughters: The Hunger Games and Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins
- Favorite "I'm glad I finally got around to it" book: Lost and Found by Carolyn Parkhurst
- Favorite book with an odd title: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows
- Best book that I wasn't interested in the first time I saw it: The Help by Kathryn Stockett
By the way, the first and last are the books that got five stars.
Bridge to Terabithia is such a good book. So sad.
ReplyDeleteI need to get around to Parkhurst's book one of these days. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I really want to read The Help. I've heard such great things about it.
I hope you have a great 2010, Alison!
I've never read anything by Neal Shusterman. After finding it on your list I think I'll have to look for it at the library!
ReplyDeleteI 'm glad to see that you enjoyed North of Beautiful too. Lyrical writing.
I also like your 20-10 and 20-10 idea. I may need to come back and check what you read. Our libraries here don't have as good a Book Rec. list. But then again, maybe the grass is always greener on the other side of a state line!!!
Happy New Year.
I was iffy about The Help at first, too. I forget what finally swayed me, but I'm really glad I read it - it was one of my Books of the Year, too.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you finally got the chance to read Carolyn Parkhurst's Lost and Found - I had a feeling you'd like the similarities to The Amazing Race :-).
Still waiting on The Help to show up at the library for me. I'm guessing the line for it is insane.
ReplyDeleteGood list -- I think it's about time I read The Help too! I also loved North of Beautiful and the Hunger Games too!
